Most of the fan games I played were the platformers, like Super Marisa World 1 & 2, Luna Nights, and Mystical Chain, but Genso Wanderer was a nice surprise, since I'd just finished Mystery Dungeon DX and still wanted some more mystery dungeon games.
As for official games, you should at least give the fighting games a try. They're incredibly soulful, and as far as the more recent ones are concerned, they're casual friendly.

YouTubers that make content for kids there like using Yukkuri "face cams", particularly for content that young girls watch, which is introducing a lot of them to Touhou. We're talking 5 - 9 year olds, here, who are obviously to young to beat a Touhou game. The Japanese on 2chan treat Reimu the same way we treat Minecraft Steve here, IE they think it'll bring a lot of children into Smash bros.
