Ok, so my son is 5 and really go into pokemon, he's still too young to read everything but is surprisingly good at the game.

I bought him a bunch of starter packs, a few elite trainer boxes, etc. but I've never played myself before now (We've been playing together for about a month now).

My main gripe is the instructions inside don't actually tell you the fucking rules at all! I had to watch a bunch of youtube shit to figure some stuff out and I am still unsure that I have the actual gameplay rules down.

So, here are the things I either don't know or have a hunch we are doing wrong:

1) When you first draw 7 cards and pick all the basic pokemon out, let's say it's 2 basics, do you get to keep the other 5 cards as your hand? We currently are. At first the instructions made it seem like you just start with ONE card and that's it. But I saw another manual that mentioned something about taking the basics out of a 7 draw.

2) Evolving pokemon. Let's say I have a basic, stage 1 and stage 2 in my hand. On my turn can I just plop all three out together at the same time? Or is there a limit on this?

3) Energy. Fuck this took forever, at first I thought it was like MTG rules as that was the only card game I played when I was a kid. The manual says dick all about how energy works, so here is how we currently play, let me know if it's wrong. Can only play 1 energy per turn. Energy is not played to the board and "tapped" like in MTG but is played directly on a pokemon. Once it is on a pokemon you can't just take it off and move it to another if you want. If a pokemon dies, the energy attached to him goes to the discard pile as well. We do allow you to place your one energy on a benched pokemon if you want.

4) Trainer buffs to a pokemon, is there a limit to how many you can throw on a card? Can my pokemon have 10 buffs giving him plus to dmg or HP? Can I have multiple of the same trainer card on one pokemon?

I would love to see them smile and content, has happy as they can be. feeding them, entertaining them and keeping them nice and warm on cold nights would be fantastic, even if it might not be the most convenient for me, I would be happy knowing they would live their lives to the fullest.

I think Charizard is the weakest design-wise of the first three starters. That's not to say I hate him, I just don't think he was given enough, though it was the first generation, so I guess it's okay

Honestly the only visually bad starters are Meganuim, Chestnaught, Samurott, Poppmaid, Delphox and Emboar

Even those have defenders

At least from visual design perspective the others are all pretty good

You can argue back and forth forever which "wins"

If anything, the closest single objectively "winning" starter is Charzard given that its one of the Faces of Pokemon and has two mega evolutions

Wrong Pokemon. Did you even pay attention in that thread? It's like you don't even care.

Gen I's designs still rock my socks. Gyarados is a close second for me, but Charizard will always be tops.
