Imagine if the three dudes in my picture weren't their actual main characters but instead all about Rock Lee, Chad, and uhh I don't watch One Piece so I don't know their biggest loser but Usopp or Chopper I guess? They wouldn't be quite as interesting if the main character got bested by the others. Unless it was all about that kind of thing like in Shield Hero. No wait he's still the strongest in the end of that too, but you get what I mean. Losers aren't that entertaining and this is the only way the Japs know how to raise the stakes, by involving destiny and hidden blood powers and shiet.
