Emeras did a decent job of remedying this by removing the grind and allowing anyone to use its abilities, although it turned finding the abilities into pure luck.
The new system could work if everymon started with a standard set and the ability pools to choose skills from were much larger. Shortening the grinding already helps a lot. tl;dr yeah, mite be cool.
