The problem is if it's done poorly but it still sells well Game Freak will make even lazier games than the 3ds crap and people will still eat it up
The real solution is to go for a nonlinear type of pick where you go type of adventure similar to how a Link Between Worlds basically gives you access to every item for "rent" and lets you go about the dungeons in any order.
Go for a minimal story that isn't another better beat the bad guys before they end the world. As you progress, have HMs be an excuse to travel back to other routes, shortcuts to other towns etc. Have some sort of passive level curve that increases as you get badges so we avoid the problem Johto had.
That way we have access to every pokemon in the region instead of having to wait after the 7th gym to catch something.
