In black and white (The anime) they were shown as the standard guardian angel type, even to this day they are still shown as guardian angel figures. They don't make many appearances in the media in the first place, to even have strong crazy views like saying they've lost their luster or guardian figure. When they do they're still the same as they've always been, protectors.
