DP and AG both series had better humor than XY series.
At the end humor largely depends on the cast which happened to be the weakest part of XY and PM series. This is why I keep talking about what kind of cast the next series should have because 60% of success of the show depend on the cast.

Not to mention that writing wise, Misty is still the best choice for Ash's love interest for them. Specially now that Ash spends 70% time on Vermilion city in Kanto which mean anipoke can make Misty visit Ash anytime they want.

Misty beat Serena at so many category that its not even funny, her only actual flaw that she is not as pretty as May & long haired Serena which can be fixed easily.

Most IMPORTANTLY, Ash and Misty dynamic is actually funny and hilarious to watch. At the end, this is what matter more than some romantic subplot since kids love comedy more than romance.

Lets be honest, Ash drawing Misty as a fire breathing demon is actually more accurate and believable considering his original personality and chemistry with Misty. S/M series tried to make Misty more similar to Dawn or Miette but its didn't work out. Ash and Misty chemistry works as Boke and Tsukkomi Routine where Ash acts as the provoker while Misty as the lecturer/ Tsukkomi.
