You *could* get the 2DS, however, that means getting a console you can't close to save space and get it in your pocket, the spotpass is actually quite entertaining, and not being able to carry it around easily just makes it pointless as a handheld console, as you most likely have an PC/xbox/Wii etc for in the house.
Which is why I'd advise splashing out the extra £10 or whatever for a proper 3DS.
