Compared to Cinderace, this is Blatant Furbait (Success) vs Blatant Furbait (Failure). I consider the latter a bigger failing in design, but I can see an argument for the former being worse.

Lazy is the right word for Coalossal, but it also didn't really ruin much. It just exists as another rock in a pile of rocks. The likes of Basculine is probably worse if we're going for "absolutely forgettable" tier
