Make everything look more interesting with more camera angles and animations: for example when the player chooses an item, focus the character actually slowly digging through their bag and pondering, and then picking something. This also needs a fuckton of detailed facial animations. And give more focus to the trainers in general, make them more emotional and proactive throughout the battle.
Give everything more rhythm. It sounds silly, but it's actually a great way to make things feel very authentic. Simply let the idle animations repeat in sync with music, and time the menu animations properly.
