K-ON was originally a manga, you should understand what that means for the series. It's hard to have a huge musical focus when your series is comprised of lines on paper. KyoAni was kind enough to compose a shitton of music for the anime, and despite what you think or remember, the anime does have quite a bit to do with music, it just takes a backseat to the characters and fun times.
Most of the stuff that happens in K-ON is because of music being the driving force. You can argue against this, but it simply wouldn't be true.
