None of this was even remotely alluded to in the show itself, and the fact that Paul went on again to challenge somebody clearly out of his league with Brendan shows that he thought far more highly of his abilities and the philosophy of his training methods than what actually constituted his skills as a battler. You're trying to ascribe far more depth to the rivalry than the show ever intended to exude, Paul was nothing more than a Silver-lite, which is alright considering the target demographic for the show, but it's silly to think of his challenge as a far larger game of three-dimensional chess to determine a fucking league champion's worth as a trainer.
