I decided to give myself a couple of extra guidelines: only Pokemon introduced in a given generation, given that as Ash I'm supposed to be shilling the new gen, and no legendaries or mythicals. I couldn't help but break that second rule for gen 5 just because I fuckin love Keldeo and it'd be a fun character to work any sort of region-spanning narrative.
The Plusle-Minun and dual-Meowstic pairs are terrible from a team-building standpoint but I figure that they'd make for a more fun team dynamic. And then the Weavile, Gliscor, and Ambipom in the Sinnoh team are obviously the same Pokemon from the Johto team, just that now that they all got evolutions in gen 4, they get to all come back and evolve.
Picking a gen 1 team was the hardest because a lot of gen 1 designs are boring.
