And I happen to think that getting a Vaporeon, Flareon, Espeon, etc. (he even made stones for Espeon/Umbreon/Leafeon/Glaceon so you could get them ASAP) before the first gym is different from getting one before the fourth gym but hey, you could argue that that's not a big deal when Falkner gets Solarbeam or whatever. Not to mention it's literally forced upon you, instead of being optional.
