This might be me pulling shit out of FF7's ass, but It may imply that the Tree is the regulator of the Planet's life force; if its dies the planet dies, and its corpse will drifted to the largest celestial object, the sun. So basically Dark Matter, being the commination of all Negativity emitted the lifeforms of that planet, is trying to kill itself by killing the planet so that it can lead to the only thing that it thought to kill it.
