I downloaded GIMP a few weeks back and until now the only thing I'd done was color a snivy for someone to get familiar with the program, but for New Years I decided I would try to learn how to make art and surprised myself by immediately following through with pic-related. It was surprisingly easy and I'm pretty happy with it as someone who can't even draw a straight line.
Mostly it came down to figuring out what all the tools were and how they worked. I watched a few videos to figure out how to do certain things as I went, but I mostly just looked around.
I think I spent about 5 hours plus a little time watching videos to get this result with only a little previous knowledge about GIMP to go on. After the fact, I think I could easily make a much better one in half the time.
