With Misty there was something there to embellish but Ash was always like pic related, so the dub kept him consistent. And over time he only got even more dense. That's why it's funny when people grouse about 4kids making shit up. If they were gonna actually change things they'd have given Ash more awareness, but they kept him just as innocent as the original.
