I loved Pokemon games as a kid, and I still love the series as a concept, but goddamn the franchise has turned into the biggest waste of potential in all of videogames.
Anyone over 18 or with any sort of pattern recognition skills should be bored out of their mind by the third gen they play by realizing how exactly the same and uninspired everything is. Same linear empty worlds, same progression beats, same "gameplay" which is just a gimped TCG, everything just barely reskinned so people don't complain when you sell them the same game for the fiftieth time, as opposed to selling them literally the same game four times per gen like they do now.
Maybe there are people that continue to enjoy that, I don't blame them for that, and I wouldn't want to ruin their fun by discontinuing the GB-RPG type of Pokemon game, but I believe it's way past high time for a step forward, and a new main line of Pokemon games that do something different and in line with the industry, as opposed to being shackled to the framework and formula of a game bound by 8kB of RAM.
How would you do a Pokemon game that fulfills its potential?
