It's a non-euclidean staircase. Look at pic related. The side view makes no fuckin sense in the presented map. A vertical cliff against a horizontal path needs a diagonal staircase to join them and the length of the stairs must necessarily be the hypotenuse of the cliff's height and the path's depth.
