I always thought the earlier gens had more charm in the spritework and character designs, and nowadays it feels too kiddie. Like, the original games were more about adventure and the newer games are all about friendships.
My favorite newer sprite... I like the Super Nerd sprite from HG/SS the best because I got a hearty chuckle from it. Overall I think HG/SS had the best spritework just based on quality alone, but I still find the older ones to have more charm.
