Usually games that do this and also have voice acted cutscenes will invent some shitty title for characters to refer to you as like "adventurer" or something.
You can see why this'd be a bad idea for Pokemon - I can just imagine all the cutscenes where every character just goes "Yo, champ-in-the-making!" to avoid having to say your name out loud.
