I made a post similar to this one a little while back but I think it still stands. For every cool thing shown off, there’s a shitty trade off for it. The game seems pretty lopsided in a lot of aspects and it’s hard to pinpoint what represents the game’s quality more accurately as a whole because of it.
Towns look great in both visuals and scale and meet the expectations for a Switch-era Pokémon, they really are impressive and I’m rather interested to see the endgame town, however the routes and the wild area look like dogshit, some of this stuff looks PS2-tier and it’s inexcusable.
Some of the music sounds great, some of it sounds rather grating. Bede’s theme is a banger while the regular trainer theme sounds pretty unprofessional.
Sometimes the animations are great pack a lot of expression in them, sometimes they’re lazy as fuck and feel really phoned in. The Dynamax splash animations in particular are REALLY embarrassing and it shows how little thought was actually put into that gimmick.
I don’t really know how to feel about the game because it feels like half of a truly great console-tier Pokémon game while the other half still feels like it’s stuck in the XY-era. I’m not gonna pretend I know what’s going on at Gamefreak and I truly do believe
some of the people working on it are trying their best, but if I had to guess, they either don’t have enough employees to take the workload, they don’t have enough time to handle the workload within the time TPCi has given them, or they really are just incompetent as fuck.
