Just finished my (blind) first playthrough of Pocket Gaiden 1. Yamask got slightly overleveled while I was trying to bruteforce the last two fights, evolved right after I beat the final boss.
I really enjoyed this romhack. Play time was about 5.5 hours for me, and I wiped at least a dozen times (though much of that was on the final two fights). There's one slight oversight/bug that annoyed me a bit, and the difficulty spikes towards the end, but all in all this game feels far more polished than most romhacks. There is a definite sense of vision. The restrictions the game places on you coupled with the short playtime makes me interested in replaying the game in the future for the sake of experimenting with different teams. In many romhacks I have little interest in replaying unless a sufficient amount of time has passed or that romhack is truly exceptional (such as Clover).
Limited pokemon selection consisting of real pokemon from mixed gens, new region, more grounded/simple story that does an excellent job of fitting the mechanics of the game.
I highly recommend this romhack to anyone that hasnt given it a shot yet. Im looking forward to playing Pocket Gaiden 2 next.
