The logic behind the gen 1 trade evolutions evolving through trading of all things was always a huge mystery to fans, as was the drastic design changes of their final forms.
The later item trade evolutions of gen 2 (Metal Coat, for example) and the Shelmet/Karrablast evolutions also show quite clearly how trade evolutions are based on the concept of things mutating and fusing together while switching places through teleportation.
It's about as solid as it gets without being officially confirmed, which will never happen because the creators hate old development secrets being leaked to the public (especially if they imply that things were cut due to coding incompetence, such as gen 1's female character and trade evos that require specific Pokemon being traded for eachother).
