I played 'competitively' for a little while. I top 16 a couple of smaller cities. It was around the time Noble Victories was coming out and there were no EXs. For a while it was a lot of fun, but then power creep started seeping in with almost every expansion and it became expensive to keep up with the formats. And its already kind of expensive as it is, you have to travel a lot. If you want to do play the TCG seriously, you better be prepared to dig into your wallet a bit. The salt in the wound is when they release all the top cards in tins 4 or 5 months later after you payed a hefty amount for 4 of a kind of those cards. If you just want to play for fun, you can build a pretty decent deck online (PTCGO) with the promo codes and then never have to travel.
