Gen.8 hasn't started this trend, it is merely the logical endpoint.
You are seeing now the consequences of Game Freak not having to produce the best game they possibly can for years. As long as the Pokemon Label is on the box, people buy it. So obviously they reused the same formula for almost every generation and cut cost wherever they could, because it sells anyway.
