Lysandre goes through all this crap generally being insane at people and building this secret elite society (who happen to spy on fucking everyone with a holocaster)
And then Lys kills himself (or whatever), and Sycamore just sort of eases into his place- because he knew Lysandre was too crazy to actually succeed.
Hence the constant "LYS YOU'RE SO GREAT" cheerleading crap. He's secretly a stone-cold badass manipulator.
