Other RPGs could be longer, have better writing, better graphics etc. But having 800+ pokemon creatures that you could keep with you for decades is kind of incredibly. Other monster raising sims never quite hit that same mark. Even in the more recent weaker entries Pokemon has been incredibly good at making you have a special connection to your team. And you can grow that, catch rare forms with special natures. Okay the story is bad, the worlds are worse and the graphics look awful. But I can bring over my shiny slowpoke I got as a kid? And I could breed some other pokemon for 10 hours? Okay cool. When you sit down and just think about that and how it hits an autistic node in all of us so well, you really get why pokemon is so special. However you slice it no other game was doing it better.
No other series really offers all this, especially not as a regular release. But of course when that is shrunk, well now you have a below average JRPG and there are already a lot of those to choose from. Even more so though it cuts future ties, you may not be able to use your special friend for a decade. They fucked up the USP, your pokemon are no longer life long friends.
