Besides why they wanted to get rid of the third character in the first place, wasn't it always three protagonists since the beginning, I think Journeys was the only time it was two protagonists (which they later tried to bring a half-baked third character that they didn't even bother to commit progression her and that is why she flopped)?
Dot might've not been planned, but she's pretty much has all the qualities of a third protagonist, I'm glad they didn't just left her to rot like they did Chloe/Koharu, also it flows better with a third character using the mon the others didn't choose.
