It was an indistinct generation in the future, and Gamefreak pulled a new Unova on us, with a new gen that featured no Pokemon from older generations.
The plot of the game, however, revolved around being one of the first colonists to travel from pokemon's world to a whole new planet with an alien ecosystem.
The plot started on regular pokemon-earth, with you, an adult, completing your astronaut training, and then being told that, for weight reasons, you could only take one Pokemon with you, and the game gave you access to your full Pokemon bank, so you could effectively pick a starter... There may have been restrictions on mythics and legends, but I selected some normal-ground dog thing that looked like a perfect shouldermon.
The travel from home to the new planet was done in a tiny, cramped space ship, alongside the very small crew. One of the crew members was my rival. The big thing was that we only knew the world contained a base habitable environment, but nothing about if there was any intelligent life or even any multicellular life.
So, we land on the new planet, and the rival character, whose starter was a hard defensive counter to mine (ghost / flying, I think), got out of the ship first and did the whole "one small step for Gary Oak" thing, which instantly made me hate him.
After that, the game was cool- big open spaces to wander around and scavenge raw materials, which a Star trek fabricator at the ship could turn into the expected Pokemon items. The alien planet held a diverse array of new Pokemon, but no trainers- instead, you'd have regular random encounters in tall grass / loose sand / dark caves / open water, and there were some Pokemon who were just visible in the world, and those guys were much stronger with better move sets, and they were usually around caches of raw materials.
