1) Starting off with Gen I, so it collects as many normalfags as possible.
2) Pokemon in virtual reality. People want to have control over throwing Pokeballs at real Pokemon, as opposed to pushing a button.
3) GPS function. Spreading out Pokemon and having them appear haphazardly gives you incentive to go out there and search like a Trainer.
4) Gyms. Everyone's always talking about what kind of Gym Leader they'd be in the Pokemon world.
5) Popularity. Of course, this came afterwards, but people like it when other people are doing something.
It all makes a lot of sense. Pokemon GO is in no way a good game. It's more that it's a good concept, since it's a concept that people clearly love enough to endure this shitty app.
