Unnecessary, it's pretty obvious they want it to replace megas but they could have just stuck the 3 turn timer on megas.
Really if it just replaced megas completely I wouldn't care, but it's very likely megas won't disappear since they came back for gen 7.
I'm expecting the post game to be devoted to megas and z-moves, I mean they gave the champion a charizard for Christ sake, one of the few pokemon with two megas.
