may is a really good character in the anime but I like her for reasons i don't really see brought up. First off she doesn't like pokemon. Not in the beginning any ways. In the first episode of advanced challenge she says the only reason she's getting a starter is so she can travel. I think it's very interesting to have her stat off disliking pokemon when the world she's in revolves around them. Especially considering her dad's job as a gym leader. She also has to keep this facade up until she finds contests, something she really likes and is good at. She's a really interesting character and easily my favorite of ash's companions.
