Originally my first companion called for Blue, but then I realized that I might be setting myself up for an NTR subplot. Brock is a good guy, a solid cook, and even though he's a manwhore he definitely honors the bro-code enough to try and win me points with Jasmine. 10/10 would be best friends with.
Jasmine is #1 waifu material. She probably knows a little first aid and would care for us or our Pokemon if anyone got injured or sick while on our journey. She has the appearance of a timid wallflower, but she's determined and focused enough to run her own gym, and multifaceted girls are best girls. Would adventure with until we eventually travel to Johto, I find out that she's a gym leader, and we're forced into an emotional battle that reinforces our friendship to the point where we're comfortable enough to share how we really feel about each other.
Volkner would be more of a mentor than a rival. He would notice my potential and try and nurture it by forcing me to overcome impossible odds until I'm finally ready to beat him... And then he starts using his real team.
And finally Hoenn, because it'd be the most fun region to travel through. It's like a tropical vacation!
