You know they have DMax so you play around the expectation of it, right? It doesn't seem unlike any game with options relying on meter or some limited resource. Burst or Sparking for example. Is it that players aren't used to contextualizing a universal resource?
It makes me think of things like, can I bait them into popping it? What's the best setup for DMax in this situation? Should I sacrifice a mon to come out positive in this exchange, or should I pop right now? Can I bait a swap into his least advantageous pokemon for DMax and force him to pop defensively?
The biggest problem with DMax seems to be how overwhelmingly powerful it is, but you can play around the idea that the first use of DMax means a DMax duel on the spot, and you need to set up the best situation for it.
Of course you guys can tell me if the meta realistically allows for you to think like that.
