Nothing will stop it if they keep trying to be pokemon, thats the issue with all these monster catcher games. Digimon had some recent games that sold somewhat decently and i think thats in no small part thanks to it being more of a traditional rpg than pokemon, it stands apart. I think being compared and trying to directly compete with pokemon makes these games fail. They need to stand on their own two feet. It shouldnt be "why would i play this game over pokemon" it should be "that game looks cool, think ill play it". Games tying themselves as pokemon competitors is ridiculous. If you want a good example of this see the comparisons a couple years ago about Overwatch and battleborn, they were completely different games but because of the way it was marketed and interpreted, many peoples ideas of it was just "worse overwatch".
Battleborn was also confusing and not all that fun, which is why it couldnt persist past that and find its own identity.
Honestly i think something that strives to be its own thing and set itself apart, not following the "four moves, six in a team, etc" that pokemon sets is the only way one can succeed. It has to embody that spirit of adventure and exploration that was key to earlier pokemon, with an interesting world and a reason to care. Something that really creates its own world, its own reason to exist that isnt just "not pokemon"
