It reeks of insecurity, there's so much crap required to justify it when all they really need to do was make it look good (they didn't). If they were actually still creative they could still be able to make simple, low-concept designs (just a dragon) that can still appear unique and stand on their own without needing endless convolutions to avoid stepping on the toes of one of the other thousand pokemon that already exist.
