I'd say since Gen 4 the anime did not give a fuck anymore about their artstyle
I also ber that people would complain way less if they kept the SM artstyle, but the story were different (with Ash travelling around collecting gym badges like in any other series), because story-wise SM feels rather like a SoL episodic anime, it does not have as much as a "red thread" as its predecessors
