There'd be a tech tree with various structures relevant to certain Pokemon (oak's lab, dragon's den, Cinnabar lab, etc.) and each Pokemon would fulfill a particular function to its champion. Each champion would have Pokemon specializing in water and aerial combat, while some would function as dedicated troop transports, some anti-air, some stealth, some area damage, some utility, etc. Entry hazards and status moves could be set as actual traps, triggered by nearby movement and removed by spinners and defoggers.
