The only ones who stuck through the Anime was hardcore fans. A fair number of SM fanbase is comprised of fans who only watched Kanto/Johto. How do I know this? To be quite fair, it's anecdotal, but it's quite common to hear they only came back since Gen 1. I kid you not, I hear this a lot of times.
