There's so much more to art direction than the style they are drawn in. Saying "People don't hate the new Pokemon, they hate the current art direction." might as well be "People don't hate the new pokemon, they just hate the new pokemon" or essentially "People wouldn't hate the new pokemon if the new pokemon were designed differently".
