>>47584222I'm somewhat of a "boomer" too, or at least what people under 25 call a boomer.
I used to hate modern cards too but I've come around somewhat. There are a lot if cool modern cards that are really nice looking especially in person. I see where you're coming from though, a lot of the generic v/gx/ex cards are very gaudy and look cheap and tacky almost like knock offs. And as someone who has owned cards on and off for 20+ years the quality is noticeably different. All my modern cards feel really thin and flimsy compared to old ones and the print quality is a complete crapshoot. I think the physical quality of cards as well as the odd off feeling tackiness and gaudiness started after the e series sets. The cards looked cheaper and the quality went down once wotc stopped printing them. A lot of the new shit they tried with card design and new types like the old style exs looked strange and almost like a bootleg like you said. At least thats my opinion. There are gems in almost every card set though.(except maybe black/white base)
I used to have a bunch of classic wotc cards. After looking at the same art and sets for so long I got really bored of them. When I see anything neo or before I just glaze over with disinterest. I sold most of my collection earlier this year at the peak of the price hype. I kept most of the money and bought just a few intersting cards that I liked from mostly modern sets. I spent like 100 and got a card with really nice art or that just looked cool for almost every mon I like.
Then I went to pkmncards dotcom and "collected" every single card I ever wanted from every English set printed by saving the pictures. I look through them every now and then for fun.
