I sent out Tentacles the Ivysaur to take care of a Doduo just outside of Celadon. I figured I could sleep powder it no problem and soak any single hit it threw my way. I didn't expect the crit.
After that, I rebuilt my team with Onion the Oddish (and very soon Gloom/Vileplume) as my main Grass type, acquired Teenyweeny the Dratini from the Game Corner as well as an Ice Beam TM (all Game Corner prizes are won with loose change found on the Game Corner floor and a very long session of winning the slots, not by direct purchase of coins) before taking on the hideout and Giovanni. Teenyweeny wiped out Giovanni's first two members, but Kangaskhan was a huge threat with Mega Punch. I ended up repeatedly switching between Awoo the Arcanine, Kinro the (shiny) Fearow and Clefi-Chan the Clefable, using Awoo's Intimidate to wear Kangaskhan's attack power down, Clefi-Chan's Encore to make switching safer, and Kinro to soak up hits and deal damage. Once that was done, Pokemon Tower was a breeze, and while I fucked up catching the Celadon Snorlax (which I wouldn't have been able to use due to my rules anyway, having already caught Tentacles's murderer on the same route), I was able to slip past the trainers and into the Safari Zone, finding an Exeggcute in Central Zone (dubbing him Huevos) and Nidoran Male (a very Pointy Bun) in Zone 1. It also seemed like a good time to swap Onion out into the box and bring out Huevos and evolve him to Exeggutor to better handle the coming threats of Giovanni, Koga and Sabrina.
