And Mauville, of course, is where disaster struck.
After bringing a new member onto the team to try and deal with the Electric-types that nobody had any counters for, alongside the usual training for the gym against trainers and wild mon alike, Effie found herself facing off against...
>Battle: Wattson!
...funnily enough, Effie's fight against the gym leader started off very well. Minnie made quick work of Wattson's Voltorb after trading only two blows with it, Tatiana took out his Electrike, and once his Magneton came out it was all over.
For Effie, that is.
The trainer had forgotten that Wattson had a fourth Pokémon on him. By the time Magneton went down, she was already celebrating. High fives went all around, Tatiana got a hug for finally being brave enough to battle a gym leader...
...and then Wattson's Manectric used Shock Wave.
Tatiana survived, but she was badly hurt. Effie healed her- and that same turn repeated for five more. Shock Wave, heal. Shock Wave, heal.
Eventually the Manectric had enough, and it unleashed a critical hit... killing Tatiana right then and there.
Obviously, that wasn't Wattson's intention, but it was his result.
The Combusken lay dead in front of her trainer, Dana standing by her side, mortified, unmoving.
From there, most of the journey became a blur. Lance flew up to try and take revenge as he had before- only to get his wings fried and his body charred. Doris actually managed the final takedown as the Manectric succumbed to a posthumous Poisoning Lance had dealt him, and the badge was won.
Effie moved on, leaving Mauville as soon as she could, catching a Numel on the next route and-
-immediately losing her to a Roselia, of all things.
She continued her trek, on through Fiery Path and Route 112... but before she could make it to 113, she couldn't take it anymore and headed home to Rustboro.
It would be another month before Effie returned to any of her adventures out in the great wilds of Hoenn.
