A lot of modern official art doesn't sell the Pokemon well, pic related for example looks dumb in the official art but in-game and in motion it's cute, the plushes and merch (like cards) are cute, it's cute when animated, and it's cute in fanart. Even in this dumb bait image the modern Sugimori from gen 3 is really lacking. There's just something missing from his stock art.
