A lot of people quit, myself included, when every top player was using full Deoxys teams, even for the special gym events where other Pokemon types got buffed. Pic related was every free player's worst nightmare. You couldn't compete in the higher ranks unless you had this team. Eventually Cosmo Energy was nerfed but the damage was already done.
With Shuffle, you can do well without ever paying money. It's grindy but you can still beat the main stages, do the weekly special stages, and get into the first three tiers for a competition without ever having to pay. You need some luck and a lot of planning, but it's always possible. With Duel, you have to either get extremely lucky with what figures you get from booster packs or you just have to cave in and pay. Unless they changed it recently, you can't really grind for good figures. You can grind EXP and coins, but not "material" to buy figures with.
No matter how much we have to shuffer, just know it could always be worse :^)
