Their music was unique and aesthetically they were set apart from the usual "we dominate world with pokemon or we destroy world too" gimmick that got old past gen 3.
When you get to their base/mansion you see how shit living conditions they have and how much of an outcasts their members air.
They felt more humane than any other villain group in any other Pokemon game (people praise BW in that regard but I never played it).
