at some point, in the lowet screen you could see your full team together
if they got poisoned or sleeping, you could see it too
I bet petting and playing with them while you walk in the upper screen was probably part of the idea too
but I can see why it wouldn't work, 3DS pokemon games would drop to 10 fps if the battle had more than 3 pokemons in battle
