Do it theway you did back in the day, with your dog-eared prima and your giant gray block of a system. Choose mons that have decent stats and good movesets/types that match them.
When I was a kid I would have killed for things like (Nidoking/Sludge Bomb) and (Haunter/Shadow Ball). Get creative, man.
