HERE ARE THE PROS AND CONS:
The 3DS is cheaper, has a smaller screen, less memory, webbed home/start/select buttons, a shiny coloured part and is compatible with the circle pad pro.
3DSXL is bigger, more memory not compatible with the CPP, is all mate finish (2 colour) and has buttons instead of webs.
I have the original 3DS (got it when the XL barely came out) because i don't like the huge-ass sized monster, which i can't fit rightly into my pocket. I don't really download the games from the e-shop, nor take pictures or anything of that sort. It is perfoct for me (plus, i can use the CPP for KH 3D, Resident Evil, etc and use the case that came with KH Special edition).
My GF has the XL. She has beyond horrible eyesight and is hard for her to read on mine (i have no problem with it), and when she plays older DS games, the visuals don't get bad, as they do with mine. She carries it on her purse.
It all depends on what your needs are. I will say that the biggest points are the text size and the DS games. If you have horrible-near-blinded eyesight, ge teth XL. If you want to play old DS games, the XL is better, though i hate seeing the non-fulscreen bars on the side (i play DS games on my original DS). If those aren't issues, get the Original
